500 000 hoverboards recalled for fire risk

500 000 hoverboards are being recalled by the American authorities. Hoverboards are electric skateboards with two big wheels that can go up to 20km/h. Lithium batteries used to operate these devices can overheat and result in smoke, fires or explosions.

According to the consumer product safety commission (CSPC), 99 incidents have been reported regarding these devices that have caused explosions or fires. At least 18 injuries were reported causing burns to the neck, legs or arms. Many airlines, railroads and college campuses have prohibited hoverboards for security purposes.
